April Classes at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op

March 29, 2010

It is rare when we get a Co-Op Class posted before they are already full. These workshops fill up in record time, so if you’re at all interested make sure to register TODAY.

While some of the classes are pricey, such as Kids in the Kitchen: Italian Favorites at $45 ($35 for members), there are occasionally more budget-friendly options. Signs of Spring: Caterpillars and Butterflies is an opportunity for children aged 3 and older to learn to create cute caterpillars and beautiful butterflies out of all-natural wool. This is a simple art project and would make a PERFECT daddy/daughter activity (crafty enough for daughter but no “girlie” craft knowledge required by dad.)

Signs of Spring: Caterpillars and Butterflies will be offered on April 17th and there are even TWO sessions being held, so there are more seats available for this class than many others held by the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op. To register for the 9:30-10:30AM session click HERE and for the 11AM-12PM session click HERE. Best of all, THIS WORKSHOP IS *FREE*! I promise, there were still seats available before we published this post, but they are not going to last.

The Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op is located at 1900 Alhambra Boulevard and for more information click here or call 916.455.2667.

We’ll see you there!

What is your favorite sign of Spring? The blossoming trees? Sprouting flowers? Green, green grass everywhere? Mine is without a doubt daylight savings time– bring on the late sunny evenings!

Earth Hour

March 27, 2010

Earth Hour 2010 happens TODAY at 8:30PM local time. This global event enables hundreds of millions of people to make a statement for environmental protection. By simply turning off your lights for one hour you can help teach your children to protect the future of the planet and educate them about the effect of climate changes on our environment. Visit the Earth Hour official site for kids, where children may play Earth Hour related games and learn more about climate change and endangered animals.

Get out the flash lights and read a good book together, or better yet, lay a blanket out under the stars and enjoy the beautiful Spring evening!

River Park “Mothers” Club + Meals for Moms

March 25, 2010

River Park neighborhood boundaries

(Image found here)

If you are a River Park resident you might have heard of the River Park Mothers Club— they have been around for 57 years now. Yes, FIFTY SEVEN years. What was originally formed as a way for new mothers to connect and support each other has become a network of 88 members and growing. “River Park Families Club” might be more accurate, as the club now has stay-at-home dads and grandparents raising their grandchildren as members.

The most popular draw to the River Park Mothers Club is their “Meals for Moms” program where they bring meals to families who have just had a baby. Another mother will show up at the home of the new arrival with a meal, a friendly face and, in some cases, extra hands to hold that new bundle of joy so the new mom can take a shower. That alone is worth its weight in gold.

Even after the families are beyond the newborn stage the River Park Mothers Club serves as discussion group, an events calendar and a way to get involved with small groups (such as a toddler group, for example.)

For more information about the River Park Mothers Club contact club president, Jill Bornemann at jbournemann@yoga-bags.com or 415.846.1497.

Has your neighborhood formed any kind of group? Let us know! We would love to help get the word out and encourage East Sacramento families to connect.

Mommy & Me Day with the Sacramento River Cats

March 23, 2010

Nothing says “summer” like baseball. Growing up I lived across the street from baseball fields and would watch as many practices and games as I could. Now that I have a little one I can’t wait to get him into little league. In the mean time we settle for Spring Training games in Arizona and River Cats games on Sunday afternoons.

To get you in the mood, the Sacramento River Cats are hosting a *FREE* Mommy and Me Day on Wednesday, March 31st from 10AM-12PM. Parents and kids ages 6 and under are invited to Raley Field to enjoy *FREE* coffee, snacks, and juice. Children will be able to participate in a number of activities throughout the event. Come out and have a fun day in the sun!

Raley Field is located at 400 Ballpark Drive in West Sacramento. For more information email raleyfield@rivercats.com.

We’ll see you there!

When you think “summer” what comes to mind?

Welcome Weekend!

Children’s Poetry Day

March 18, 2010

Did you know that March 21st is Children’s Poetry Day?

Or that the month of March is…

  • Womens History Month
  • Youth Art Month
  • American Red Cross Month
  • Music in our Schools Month
  • National Craft Month and
  • National Noodle Month?

True story. Why not use one of those as an excuse to do something fun with your child to “celebrate”?

Here are a few ideas:

  • Write a poem with your child with as many words as you can find that rhyme with “March” (making up your own words is completely acceptable)
  • Teach your child about a female family member they don’t know much about or better yet, take them to visit an elderly female to hear about her history
  • Create a work of art out of Red Cross logos…
  • Let your child make a musical instrument out of non-musical instrument materials (pots and pans are my 1-year-old’s favorite)
  • Hold a family Iron Chef competition with prizes for “Best Tasting” and “Most Unique Ingredients” pasta dishes

Instant and *FREE* family fun.

Enjoy!

Does your child have a favorite poet (or author) or a favorite poem?

Gymnastics for Toddlers

March 17, 2010

“Now enROLLing!” Clever, eh? What kiddo doesn’t like to romp, roll and tumble (especially if it is across the bed you’ve just made our couch you’ve just fluffed?) OutReach Gymnastics and Motor Learning is the perfect solution.

Yolanda Milliken is a resident of East Sacramento with a BS in Kinesiology and over 8 years of teaching gymnastics under her mat hat. Check out her philosophy:

Gymnastics at an early age is a fun way to help children develop proficiency in movement skills.  It allows for focus to be on the uniqueness and abilities of each child in a non-competitive environment.  Perceptual motor development is a crucial need in the early years, influencing more than just the child’s ability to move.  It also has an important influence on readiness for learning.

OutReach Gymnastics is designed for children of preschool age (2-6) and classes take place Tuesday through Thursday at 10AM, 11AM and 12PM. Classes are ongoing, there is no registration fee, and the cost is $60 for 6 sessions. Participants attend one 45-minute class per week.

OutReach Gymnastics classes are taught at River Life Church located at 4401 A Street and for more information or to reserve a space, email millifamil@comcast.net or call 916.833.5744.

We’ll see you there!
