Runaway Stage presents

March 15, 2011

We LOVE theater– especially if it involves kids. The 24th Street Theater is the home of the Runaway Stage, a theater company performing plays and musicals by kids and for kids (and for adults too). With super reasonable tickets, a show at the Runaway Stage might be just the thing to beat the cabin fever that is setting in due to all the rain this week.

You have a choice of two productions this month. The first is Pigs In Space which runs Saturdays March 19th and 26th at both 12pm and 2pm. Shows are just $8 for general admission and $6 for kids 12 and under!

The second, a musical, Seussical Jr. plays March 22-24 at 7pm and admission is just $10. Here is a little more about Seussical Jr.:

Do you like Green Eggs and Ham and pretty much all the other Dr. Seuss books? Well, from there to here and here to there, funny things are everywhere during this staging of Seussical Jr. Kids and teens from Runaway Stage Productions’ youth workshops will perform this one-act version of the Broadway musical, which still features beloved characters such as Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat and Gertrude McFuzz, and songs like “Oh the Thinks You Can Think”.

The Runaway Stage is located inside the 24th Street Theater at 2791 24th Street and for more information click HERE or call 916.207.1226.

Week End Wrap Up + a GIVEAWAY!

August 6, 2010

August is one of the busiest months for fun, *FREE*, family friendly activities and events in East Sacramento. Take advantage of one of the last few weekends of summer (at least, summer vacation from school) and enjoy one of the following…

After spending all summer entertaining your kids from sun up to sun down, could you use a date night? Now through September 30, McCormick & Schmick’s is offering $5 movie tickets you can add to your bill, with the purchase of an entrée at their restaurant. Personally, I haven’t been to the movie theater in… I can’t even remember… but I know how expensive it has become. This is the perfect excuse to splurge (maybe even make it a girls night and you won’t have to get a sitter– thanks, East Sac Dad) and get out of the house without having to pack a bag full of extra diapers, baby wipes and Goldfish crackers!

McCormick & Schmick’s even wants to help one East Sac Mom (or dad) out by offering a complimentary $25 gift certificate toward their night on the town.

Bringing the freshest seafood to Sacramento, McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant is located at the historical Elks Club Building in downtown Sacramento – just minutes from the Convention Center and Arco Arena, as well as near a number of theaters.  Whether you are a local or a visitor, enjoy a delicious, specially prepared meal combined with impeccable service and meticulous attention to detail.  Come to McCormick & Schmick’s and experience seafood dining at its finest!

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling us what your favorite East Sacramento activity or event is! The contest closes at midnight on Thursday, August 12 and a winner will be selected at random and announced next Friday. Good luck!

The Runaway Stage Presents

March 10, 2010

“Goldilocks and the Misadventures of Mother Goose”

Mother Goose is having a heck of a day. Goldilocks is refusing to be a part of the Three Bears story. Characters from other fairy tales keep popping in and out, and worst of all her goose has disappeared. This is a charming and humorous retelling of the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” It shows how quickly an enemy can become a friend, and the true meaning of family.

I am going to have to find a niece or nephew (or neighbor?!) to take to see this show. Not only is the Storybook Theater presenting this performance for ONLY $5 per ticket, but they do an incredible job with the children’s productions. Entertaining for adults as well.

Showtimes for “Goldilocks and the Misadventures of Mother Goose” are 12PM and 2PM on Saturday March 13, 20 and 27. The Runaway Stage is located at the 24th Street Theater at 2791 24th Street. For more information click here or call 916.207.1226.

At what age do you think a child can appreciate this kind of theater? How else do you introduce your children to performing arts?

The Elves and the Shoemaker

December 15, 2009

Laugh when two merry elves arrive at a small village in the Black Forest to discover a poor, gentle shoemaker who clearly needs their assistance. Their good deeds, kindness and resourcefulness save the shoemaker and his wife from a bleak and unhappy holiday. This hilarious CTC production has been delighting students throughout the U. S. for two decades!

Don’t take this the wrong way, because I’m not advocating that you encourage your child to skip school, NOR am I downplaying the value of education. That said, I believe that once in a while it is okay to let your child miss a day of school in the name of quality time. Kids can sometimes get lost in the holiday shuffle (between packages, Christmas cards, wrapping paper and baking) and taking a day with just you and your little one can mean more than a tree full of gifts for them.

Here is an idea: surprise your elementary school kiddo with a special day this Thursday that includes lunch with just the two of you and The Elves and the Shoemaker.

The California Theater Center is performing The Elves and the Shoemaker at the Crest Theater on Thursday, December 17th with showtimes at 10AM and 12PM. Tickets are $7-10 and the Crest is located at 1013 K Street.

For more information click here or call 800.606.0424.

Runaway Stage presents…

September 18, 2009

esm-runaway stage

This hilarious original musical comedy written by Ray Fisher gives us a contemporary new slant on a well loved story. A fun-filled afternoon for the whole family.

The Big Bad Wolf “sets the story straight” and shares the real deal behind his victims and their not-so-innocent pasts. This is a perfect way to expose your children to musicals, theater, and a fun twist on a traditional story. The Runaway Stage, a non-profit educational corporation, is presenting this show Saturday, September 19th and 26th.

You can catch the musical the next two Saturdays at noon and 2PM for only $5. You cannotfind a better deal on a musical or a theater production. It’s a better price than a cinema matinee AND supports local actors and the Sacramento playwright responsible for this particular show.

The Runaway Stage is located in the 24th St Theater at 2791 24th St. For more information click here or call 916.207.1226.
