Week End Wrap Up

July 29, 2011

Happy Friday East Sacramento Moms and Dads! What do you and your families have planned for this last weekend in July? Back-to-school shopping yet? Wishful thinking, maybe. ūüôā Here are a few suggestions and we’d love to hear from you if you end up out and about in East Sacramento…

  • Ginger Elizabeth’s Cupcake Day is tomorrow! Drop by the¬†boutique at 1801 L Street to sample the Plum Elderflower Cobbler, Peach Melba, Real Red Velvet, or the Salty Caramel cupcake for only $3 each. Mmm…
  • Have you been to Concert in the Park yet this summer? We caught a concert there a few weeks ago and were surprised at how many families and children were there– and enjoying it! Check it out tonight starting at 5PM. Also, it’s *FREE*!
  • Enjoy the fruits (fish, flowers, and far more!) of the downtown farmer’s market under the freeway¬†from 8AM to 12PM on Sunday morning. Get there early for the best selection and be sure to stop by the fresh egg booth in the corner.
  • If you have a baby, don’t miss the Central Library’s Baby Lapsit story time at noon on Sunday. Parking on the street is *FREE* and so is the music and story time.

Enjoy the time with your families and we’ll see you there!

New Carbon Monoxide law passed in CA

July 12, 2011

July 1st marked the passing of Senate Bill 183 which calls for at least one CO2 detector in each single family residence. Find out more about the bill HERE. You can find a handy safety checklist for your home HERE. Does your home already have a CO2 detector? Were you aware of the bill that passed requiring CO2 detectors in homes?

My favorite kind of scoop

July 11, 2011

Did you know there’s a new ice cream shop in East Sac?! Here’s the scoop (ahem, okay we’re done with that, I promise)…

What’s the Scoop opened recently in East Sacramento and is proudly serving Gunther’s ice cream. They have a ton of flavors and some super yummy concoctions (hello, 50-50, a champagne and berry ice with vanilla ice cream) and fabulous local service. Check out the Yelp reviews HERE (warning, out of 10, I’m not sure how many are authentic) and then go taste for yourself! Let us know what you think! East Sacramento Mom readers even get 20% off one item for mentioning you found them through East Sac Mom.

What’s the Scoop is located at 6350 Folsom Boulevard, next to Dos Coyotes.

We’ll see you there!

Week End Wrap Up

July 8, 2011

Happy Friday East Sac Mamas! Did anyone else need the rest of the week to recover from Monday’s festivities? Thanks to ESM reader, Kati for sharing that Sacramento Scoop’s recap images HERE. Now that we’re all rested up, what do you and your families have planned for the weekend? We have a few suggestions, if you need some inspiration…

  • Of course, this weekend is Second Saturday. Get out and take in some local art and culture. We take our toddler to Second Saturday regularly and love the *FREE* family fun! Be sure to treat yourself to something cold at Ginger Elizabeth.
  • The National Train Show is this weekend at the Convention Center. Have a little one into Thomas the Tank Engine? You won’t want to miss exposing them to an array of train history, technology and more.
  • On Sundays in July, Fairytale Town has a children’s concert series. This weekend features Francie Dillon and the concert is *FREE* with admission.
We’ll see you there!

And we’re back… with a giveaway!

June 22, 2011

It is amazing just how much you can get done during a six-week blog break. I’m back just in time for our biggest East Sacramento event (the 4th of July parade), another media appearance (more on that in a minute) and a perfect-for-summer set of giveaways. Thank you for your continued support of East Sacramento Mom, and a HUGE thanks to Courtney, Kristen, and Paige and Jessica for their contributions and understanding during the hiatus.

On to the television spotlight, I (June) will be on News 10 on Friday morning at 6:15am reviewing products for summer fun at the park. Check out the segment, but more importantly, watch it to check out the cool stuff you can enter to win! Here’s a preview…

Aquajogger Junior

¬†The AquaJogger Junior is a fantastic in-water device that allows kids to learn to swim, play water games and have fitness fun. The Aquajogger Junior is worn like a belt and comfortably suspends the child wearing it at shoulder level in deep water allowing her/him to breathe normally and move freely while performing a wide variety of water activities. Contoured to fit a child’s body, and both fully adjustible and secure, the Aquajogger Junior is easy to use and comfortable. Also available for older children are in-water exercise tools, like dumbbells and leg weights. Includes a Splash Club Handbook featuring water games, swimming tips, and safety information. For ages 3 and up. $24.95.

Peekaru Ozone

¬†Peekaru Ozone lets parents take their baby out in the sunshine without worrying about sun damage or having to apply chemical sunscreens. The Peekaru Ozone is a uniquely breathable and lightweight baby carrier sun cover that attaches securely over any soft baby carrier, keeping baby shaded and cool. Can also be attached to any standard car seat or stroller. The super soft, moisture-wicking fabric blocks 95% of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays while keeping baby cool and comfortable. Fits babies from birth through two years with an adjustable bottom that easily and securely cinches up for use with small babies, and lets out to accommodate babies’ legs as they grow. $44.95.

The Sport-Brella XL gives the whole family instant protection from the sun, rain, and wind with its domed shape, side flaps and 125 SPF. Its umbrella action open mechanism allows it to be set up in just three seconds and fits the family, fully 9 ft. wide. Includes top wind vents, side zippered windows for efficient airflow and additional visibility, internal pockets for gear and valuables, convenient carry bag and tethers/ground stakes for use when necessary for additional stability. $69.99

Sport-Brella Chair

The Sport-Brella Chair is the ultimate chair for any outdoor setting. It is a portable fold-up sport chair, but unlike other fold-out sport chairs, it has an attached 360 degree swivel umbrella which can be moved from one side of the chair to the other and can be swiveled at 3 different points at the push of a button to offer complete coverage from the sun and wind at any conceivable angle. The umbrella opens out to 46 inches wide and has a UPF 50+ lining for maximum sun protection. The Sport-Brella Chair also has a built-in cup holder, bottle opener and item pouch. Folds down instantly and fits into a compact carry bag. $39.99

So there you have it, East Sac Moms. Check back on Friday to find out how to win one of the cool items above. In the mean time, I’ll be working on cleaning up the calendar page, and scheduling some cool East Sacramento activity posts for you. Thanks again for your patience, and I look forward to hearing from you and sharing East Sac events and activities for you.

We’ll see you there!

A break

May 14, 2011

This¬†is just going to be a short and sweet post. Maybe the last, but maybe not. I truly believe that anything worth doing, is worth doing well, and I feel I have not been able to give 100% to East Sacramento Mom lately. I need a break, rather than giving less than my best to you. So, in the meantime, continue to get out and enjoy our neighborhood, meet your neighbors, and grow together. Hopefully we’ll be back soon, and better than ever. Thank you for all of your support, contributions, and encouragement.

Real Mom Review: Shutterfly’s Mother’s Day Cards

April 26, 2011

Last October we shared our favorite picks for holidays cards by Shutterfly, and now that Easter is over the VERY next thing on our list is Mother’s Day. You really can’t go wrong with photo gifts for the family, can you? We usually go with a Mother’s Day photo book for our moms and Mother’s Day cards for the rest of the family (aunts, grandma’s, cousins, etc.) but maybe I’ll be organized enough this year to get a Personalized Gift for mom. Here are my top three card picks at the moment…

Just a simple picture. Perfect.

You had me at "vintage".

Playful and sweet. We have a winner!

What is on your Mother’s Day wish list? Something fun from your favorite shop? A night out with the hubs? A day at home alone? Me too! All of the above. (Babes, are you reading? wink, wink) No matter what, I am going to cherish that burnt toast breakfast-in-bed and noodle necklace for the rest of my life. Here’s to mom’s. ūüôā

East Sacramento Moms who have your own blog, click HERE¬†for a chance¬†to write a post sharing your Mother’s Day thoughts and a few of your favorite designs and Shutterfly will give you 50 *FREE* photo cards!

Enjoy ūüôā

Wonder Tree: A New School by the Founders of Art Beast

April 19, 2011

The founders of Art Beast are on the Founding Board of Wonder Tree, a new elementary school opening in Fall 2011 in Midtown Sacramento. Wonder Tree will take a balanced approach to keeping learning magical, meaningful, and full of joyful challenge. We are currently registering children for Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2.

Our Mission
Wonder Tree School is a community of children, parents, and teachers engaged in student-centered learning that values strong academics, social justice, and the natural world. Students grow to be brave, compassionate, and action oriented, and to think critically and creatively about the world around them. Our educational environment is forged by the dynamic interaction of great teachers, empowered and curious children, and our evolving understanding of how the brain learns best.

Our Approach
Though Wonder Tree does not claim a particular educational philosophy, our design infuses elements of Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, Democratic Education, Expeditionary Learning and Humane Education. We embrace project based learning, healthy classroom rhythms, a vibrant school community, academic rigor and daily engagement with the arts, with movement, and with the outdoors. We hope to provide an environment that holds each child as they develop their strength, brilliance, sense of responsibility, and capacity to love.

Want to learn more? Read the complete details at the Wonder Tree website. They will hold the first informational meeting on April 27th from 6:00PM to 7:30PM at the planned school location. They can also be reached by phone at 916.760.7349, or by email at Wonder Tree School also has a Facebook Page with regular updates.

The Wonder Tree School will be located at the Pioneer Church at 2700 L Street just across from Sutter’s Fort.

We’ll see you there!
