Run for the Buns + Resurrection Run

March 31, 2010

Support the Sacramento House Rabbit Society in their rescue, adoption and outreach programs. This 10K/5K/walk is perfectly timed to coordinate with Easter, during which many parents opt to surprise their kids with a real “Easter bunny”. Rabbits can make great pets if families get educated about their care ahead of time.

Participation is $40 per individual or $65 per family and includes one or two race t-shirts. To register, click here to download the form, visit Healthy Habits at 2224 J Street or register on race day.

For more information click here or call 916.863.9690.

So maybe you aren’t passionate about rabbits or $40 is a little steep for a fun run, you can still get out and get some exercise while supporting a good cause with the 5th Annual Capitol Foursquare Church Resurrection 5K Run & Walk (say that 5 times fast). The course begins and ends at Glenn Hall Park in River Park on Saturday, April 3rd at 8:30AM.

Registration for the race is $25 and there is a *FREE* half-mile kids run. Proceeds benefit an orphanage and school for children in Mbale, Uganda, who have lost parents to AIDS. These events are sponsored by Koinonia Sports.

For more information or to register click here or call 916.4574726.

We’ll see you there!

When it comes to bunnies, will your family be enjoying the chocolate kind this Easter? Marshmallow? Or the real thing (to have as a pet– although I suppose you could eat them too)?

We’ll see you there!

McKinley Park Easter Egg Hunt & Pancake Breakfast + Easter Egg Dyeing at Whole Foods

March 30, 2010

The East Sacramento-Midtown Kiwanis Club is sponsoring the 23rd annual pancake breakfast and Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 3rd. Breakfast will be served from 7:30-11AM in the Clunie Community Center at McKinley Park. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children with proceeds benefiting the McKinley Park playground project, the Kiwanis Family House at UC Davis Medical Center and other community service projects.

At 9:30AM a *FREE* Easter egg hunt for children up to age 10 will be held and there will be other childrens activities including carnival games.

McKinley Park is located at 601 Alhambra Boulevard and for more information click here or call 916.484.1314.

In case Saturday rolls around and your kids haven’t had enough egg dyeing of their own (or if you want to avoid the mess on your kitchen table at home) you can take them to Whole Foods for Natural Egg Dyeing. Whole Foods will be using natural plant-based dyes to tint hard-boiled eggs, teaching your children to “go green” in many colors.

There will be two Natural Egg Dyeing sessions at Whole Foods on Saturday, one at 11AM and one at 2PM. Participation is limited to 10 children per class and is open to kids aged 5-12. Participants 8 or younger will need an adult chaperone. To register for the 11AM click here and for the 2PM session click here.

Whole Foods is located at 4315 Arden Way and for more information click here or call 916.488.2800 ext 260.

We’ll see you there!

Do you have a favorite egg decorating technique? Do you use traditional dyes? Crayons? Paper?

April Classes at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op

March 29, 2010

It is rare when we get a Co-Op Class posted before they are already full. These workshops fill up in record time, so if you’re at all interested make sure to register TODAY.

While some of the classes are pricey, such as Kids in the Kitchen: Italian Favorites at $45 ($35 for members), there are occasionally more budget-friendly options. Signs of Spring: Caterpillars and Butterflies is an opportunity for children aged 3 and older to learn to create cute caterpillars and beautiful butterflies out of all-natural wool. This is a simple art project and would make a PERFECT daddy/daughter activity (crafty enough for daughter but no “girlie” craft knowledge required by dad.)

Signs of Spring: Caterpillars and Butterflies will be offered on April 17th and there are even TWO sessions being held, so there are more seats available for this class than many others held by the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op. To register for the 9:30-10:30AM session click HERE and for the 11AM-12PM session click HERE. Best of all, THIS WORKSHOP IS *FREE*! I promise, there were still seats available before we published this post, but they are not going to last.

The Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op is located at 1900 Alhambra Boulevard and for more information click here or call 916.455.2667.

We’ll see you there!

What is your favorite sign of Spring? The blossoming trees? Sprouting flowers? Green, green grass everywhere? Mine is without a doubt daylight savings time– bring on the late sunny evenings!

Earth Hour

March 27, 2010

Earth Hour 2010 happens TODAY at 8:30PM local time. This global event enables hundreds of millions of people to make a statement for environmental protection. By simply turning off your lights for one hour you can help teach your children to protect the future of the planet and educate them about the effect of climate changes on our environment. Visit the Earth Hour official site for kids, where children may play Earth Hour related games and learn more about climate change and endangered animals.

Get out the flash lights and read a good book together, or better yet, lay a blanket out under the stars and enjoy the beautiful Spring evening!

River Park “Mothers” Club + Meals for Moms

March 25, 2010

River Park neighborhood boundaries

(Image found here)

If you are a River Park resident you might have heard of the River Park Mothers Club— they have been around for 57 years now. Yes, FIFTY SEVEN years. What was originally formed as a way for new mothers to connect and support each other has become a network of 88 members and growing. “River Park Families Club” might be more accurate, as the club now has stay-at-home dads and grandparents raising their grandchildren as members.

The most popular draw to the River Park Mothers Club is their “Meals for Moms” program where they bring meals to families who have just had a baby. Another mother will show up at the home of the new arrival with a meal, a friendly face and, in some cases, extra hands to hold that new bundle of joy so the new mom can take a shower. That alone is worth its weight in gold.

Even after the families are beyond the newborn stage the River Park Mothers Club serves as discussion group, an events calendar and a way to get involved with small groups (such as a toddler group, for example.)

For more information about the River Park Mothers Club contact club president, Jill Bornemann at or 415.846.1497.

Has your neighborhood formed any kind of group? Let us know! We would love to help get the word out and encourage East Sacramento families to connect.

Mommy & Me Day with the Sacramento River Cats

March 23, 2010

Nothing says “summer” like baseball. Growing up I lived across the street from baseball fields and would watch as many practices and games as I could. Now that I have a little one I can’t wait to get him into little league. In the mean time we settle for Spring Training games in Arizona and River Cats games on Sunday afternoons.

To get you in the mood, the Sacramento River Cats are hosting a *FREE* Mommy and Me Day on Wednesday, March 31st from 10AM-12PM. Parents and kids ages 6 and under are invited to Raley Field to enjoy *FREE* coffee, snacks, and juice. Children will be able to participate in a number of activities throughout the event. Come out and have a fun day in the sun!

Raley Field is located at 400 Ballpark Drive in West Sacramento. For more information email

We’ll see you there!

When you think “summer” what comes to mind?
