Sacred Heart Fall Festival

September 30, 2009

esm-sacred heartDon’t you just love the phrase “fall festival”? Those two little words evoke images of sweaters, soups, leaves and crafts! An unofficial ESM poll showed that fall is the favored season for many East Sacramento Mom’s. Any why not, with how gorgeous our neighborhood is during October and November? Sacred Heart School and Parish is hosting their 68th annual Fall Festival this Saturday, October 3rd from 11AM to dusk.

Admission is *FREE* and anyone is welcome. Enjoy children’s games, ever-popular bingo, crafts (of course), bounce houses and slides, lots of food and live entertainment.

The Sacred Heart Fall Festival will be held at 3933 I Street. For more information click here or call 916.452.4156.

Turn Verein’s 42nd Annual Oktoberfest

September 29, 2009

Even though the start of autumn is in September, it isn’t until October that it really starts feeling like fall. The weather begins to cool down (begins to) and it is no longer unbearable to spend time outdoors. That is evidenced by the abundance of East Sacramento events this month.

Kick off fall in East Sac the right way– with the Turn Verein’s annual Oktoberfest! Immerse yourself in German culture with music (live bands Al Gruber and Die Alpen), dancing, brew from Munich, authentic German food and more.

Friday, October 2nd from 6-11PM there will be entertainment by the Al Gruber Band in the Main Hall and AKA Live in the upstairs hall.

Saturday, October 3rd enjoy music from the Die Alpen Band and local favorite the Q Balls. Saturday’s festivities take place starting at 3PM and music and dancing continue until 11PM.

Adult admission is $10, children ages 6-12 are $5 and under age 6 are *FREE*. The Sacramento Turn Verein is located at 3349 J Street.

Happy Anniversary Burr’s Fountain!

September 28, 2009

Ice cream combined with supporting an East Sacramento small business gets us every time. Thursday, October 1st is the 20th anniversary of the opening of Burr’s Fountain on Folsom Boulevard and you can bet we’ll be there to show our support! It has everything nothing to do with the fact that Jim Burr (yep, the owner himself) is selling kiddie cones for the same price he sold them for in 1989: 75 cents!

As if you needed another excuse to head over to Burr’s on Thursday, there will also be raffles and a 20% discount on all dine-in meals.

Burrs is located at 4920 Folsom Boulevard. For more information call 916.452.5516.

For (East Sac) Mom: CrossFit East Sacramento

September 25, 2009

Once in a while we have to remember to do something for ourselves. I always tell other mom’s that, “You can’t take care of anyone else if you’re not taking care of yourself.” It’s so true! When we give 100% of the time it can be exhausting– especially if we aren’t getting what we need, be that adequate nutrition, sleep, adult interaction, intimacy, or whatever we’re lacking.

One of the things this East Sac Mom has a tendency to neglect is my physical health, specifically exercise. I can justify not spending 20 minutes on the treadmill by telling myself all the kid-chasing I did throughout the day was just as good. In reality I know that even a quick workout helps not just my physical health, but also my mental well-being. When I work out I feel better and (possibly even more importantly) I feel like I look better.

This is where CrossFit East Sacramento fits in. Located at 891 57th St near Antique Row, they offer a *FREE* class on Saturday mornings at 10AM. Make some time to check it out. Even if you can’t afford a membership or can’t make the commitment to work out on a regular basis, at least you know you have the option to do something different, drop in on a Saturday morning, and do something for yourself for a change.

Free Compost Seminars by the City of Sacramento

September 24, 2009

esm-compostingDid you know that the City of Sacramento offers *FREE* how-to compost workshops? The seminars are held a few times a year and the next one is coming up Saturday, October 3rd at the Southside Park Community Garden located at 5th and W Streets from 8-10AM.

Composting is great for gardening but it also helps conserve water and allows you to recycle yard and (organic) kitchen waste. The seminar includes a how-to lesson, a compost recipe and participants can purchase a Biostack compost bin for $65! These bins are $129 retail and the City is offering them at cost.

Reservations are not necessary, you can just show up! This would be a great (educational AND fun) activity for school-aged kids that they can easily take ownership of and a project they can be responsible for.

Runaway Stage presents…

September 18, 2009

esm-runaway stage

This hilarious original musical comedy written by Ray Fisher gives us a contemporary new slant on a well loved story. A fun-filled afternoon for the whole family.

The Big Bad Wolf “sets the story straight” and shares the real deal behind his victims and their not-so-innocent pasts. This is a perfect way to expose your children to musicals, theater, and a fun twist on a traditional story. The Runaway Stage, a non-profit educational corporation, is presenting this show Saturday, September 19th and 26th.

You can catch the musical the next two Saturdays at noon and 2PM for only $5. You cannotfind a better deal on a musical or a theater production. It’s a better price than a cinema matinee AND supports local actors and the Sacramento playwright responsible for this particular show.

The Runaway Stage is located in the 24th St Theater at 2791 24th St. For more information click here or call 916.207.1226.

Don’t forget to check out what else is happening around East Sacramento this weekend:
