Bear with me here. This is one of those activities that sounds complicated but really isn’t. Have you heard of geocaching?

“Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.”

In other words, people out there hide things, post coordinates, and you go find them! Wouldn’t your kids absolutely love to go on a real life treasure hunt? Click here to check out the official geocache website and search for treasure in the 95819 zip code.

You do need a GPS device, preferably hand-held, but why not invest in one to share with your neighbors? Or find a used one on craigslist? Or Ebay?

I would LOVE to hear someone’s feedback if they try this. My little guy is too young to appreciate the hunt, but he enjoys being outdoors so we’ll have to venture out and geocache-it-up a little.

I just posted about geocaching as a great family activity and your post also came up. =) As soon as our son could walk he was out hunting sticks and leaves and bugs.
